Reuse Old Computers: Reduce Emissions, Sustain Value

2023 / 05 / 30

As the world faces urgent challenges in terms of climate change's impact on the environment, human existence, and national security, finding solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and drive sustainable environmental actions becomes crucial. Governments have declared the goal of "Net Zero Emissions" by 2050 and implemented various measures, demonstrating their determination to address climate change and lay the groundwork for more resilient climate legislation. As part of responding to the government's Net Zero policies, businesses should actively demonstrate their commitment by integrating environmental policies into their daily operations.

The reuse of old computers is a promising action that can simultaneously reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sustain the value of electronic devices. During the process of business growth and evaluations of hardware and software upgrades, the IT department discovered outdated and idle desktop computer equipment stored in the warehouse. These devices were purchased between 2013 and 2014. Although these old devices may no longer be suitable for high-performance tasks, they are still sufficient for general document processing or web browsing needs. Considering the importance of resource conservation and promoting reuse as an environmentally driven initiative, the company decided to sell these old devices to employees at a low cost rather than disposing of them directly. This initiative provides equal opportunities for every employee to participate through a lottery system, which not only aligns with the Gender Equality goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5) but also promotes employee well-being.

This action also brings environmental benefits. By reselling old computers to employees, we reduce the waste and other disposal issues generated during the recycling process of these devices. This contributes to achieving SDG 12, which focuses on responsible consumption and production, by reducing the consumption of resources through the purchase of new products and encouraging sustainable use of existing resources. Additionally, this action has a positive impact on the Climate Action goal (SDG 13). According to data and assessments provided by the Environmental Protection Agency, reselling these old computers and adding high-performance computers will help reduce approximately 6.02  metric tons of CO2e greenhouse gas emissions annually. This means that through the reuse of old devices, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also embrace the principles of energy conservation, carbon reduction, and pursuit of a sustainable environment.

This action not only provides environmental benefits but also brings business value to the company. By selling to employees, we transform old devices into value while offering a cost-effective solution. Employees can purchase computer equipment at a lower price, and the company saves costs associated with disposal and recycling. This win-win approach not only contributes to employee productivity and personal development but also demonstrates the company's commitment to environmental sustainability actions and the SDGs.

Promoting environmental sustainability while supporting Gender Equality (SDG 5), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Climate Action (SDG 13) is a multifaceted initiative. Through the reuse of old computers, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize resource waste, sustain the value of electronic devices, and foster the company's internal sustainable development. This action is not only significant in terms of environmental protection but also showcases the company's support for the global agenda represented by the SDGs. Through these efforts, we can collectively pursue a more sustainable and equitable future, making positive contributions to our environment and society.
